What to Expect on Exam Day

The Oral Certifying Examinaiton is conducted once per year in Dallas, Texas.

All Candidates are required to stay the night prior to their examination at the Melrose Warwick. Information about the hotels location and room rates will be included with examination scheduling notifications sent in December 2016.

Candidates are required to wear business attire. Business attire for women includes a conservative dress or a suit. Business attire for men is a suit and tie or a sports coat and tie.

The day of the examination Candidates must report to the Oak Lawn Room at the Warwick Melrose Hotel for check-in. A light breakfast or lunch and beverages will be provided.

  • AM Candidates check-in is open from 7:15 AM to 7:45 AM
  • PM Candidates check-in is open from 11:45 AM to 12:15 PM

Candidates are required to bring one form of government issued identification with picture (i.e. driver's license, passport, military ID or federal/state/country issued ID). Following check-in and greetings from the ABOMS President, Candidates will be moved to the testing center by transportation provided by ABOMS. Candidates may not arrive or leave the testing center by alternate transportation.

After arrival, Candidates will recieve a briefing from the ABOMS Vice President. Candidates will then be directed to the testing floor to begin the examination sessions.

Each Candidate will be given an Examination Card which will identify the Examiners who will be administering each examination Surgery Section. Each Candidate and Examiner is required to sign the Examination Card at the beginning of each examination Surgery Section. The ABOMS makes every attempt to ensure that no Candidate is examined by an individual from his/her residency training program, residing in the same state, or otherwise familiar in a manner which could cause a perceived conflict of interest.

In between each 50-minute session are 5-minute breaks. Restrooms are located on the testing floor and each room is equipped with water, pointers, and a small dry erase board.

At the conclusion of the last examination, a Candidate will turn in his/her Examination Card and will proceed to the Debriefing room. The debriefing session allows a Candidate to provide feedback about the examination to Board members and ask any questions. Candidates will receive another opportunity to provide feedback by the board by completing an online survey. The link to the survey will be sent via email to each Candidate after each AM and PM Examination session.
