Meet your 3 Director Nominees

Three nominees were determined by the ABOMS Examination Committee at the Board’s most recent Oral Certifying Examination (OCE). The committee interacts consistently with its nominees giving the members of the committee insightful background and knowledge for who would best serve on the Board.

The individuals listed below were nominated by their peers on the committee and will be presented to the AAOMS House of Delegates for election.

Get to know your Board nominees by learning about their practice and what they do outside of work. Director Nominees will also have personal statements in the summer edition of the ABOMS newsletter, The Diplomate.

Do you have an particular area of focus in your practice?

I was fortunate to have joined a busy group private practice in the Shenandoah Valley surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains. We have a unique provider model in our specialty with two surgeons and a nurse practitioner. I stay busy with traditional private practice, in-office surgery and I treat benign pathology and orthognathic surgery at our regional hospital. Practicing in a more rural location (nearest OMS program is MCV which is 90 miles east), requires us to treat more pathology and more extensive surgical cases (including nerve repair) which has given me the opportunity to continue to treat patients who otherwise might have gone to a university setting for their definitive care. I currently serve as the Augusta Health Hospital OMS Service Chief and in the past have been adjunct faculty at The University of Virginia for an Extramural OMS rotation for their GPR residency.

Help our Diplomates understand who you are outside of being a surgeon. What do you enjoy doing outside of the specialty?

Outside of our busy private practice, I enjoy spending time volunteering for local organizations and have served on charitable committees, including the Augusta Regional Dental Clinic Board, the Virginia Fly Fishing Festival Committee, the Grace Race 5K Run/Walk Event, and the Waynesboro YMCA Tri for the Y Triathlon. I have also served on the session of my local church, Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church and have been a parent leader with The Boy Scouts of America. I coached youth athletics (swimming and travel soccer) for over 20 years and even served as a volunteer Athletic Director for Stuart Hall Lower School. In my spare time, I love spending time with my family surfing, snow skiing, and competing in triathlons. My wife, Kristen, and I also enjoy visiting local wineries and traveling to see our two sons, Spencer and Cooper, who are college students at Florida State University. Go Noles!

Do you have an particular area of focus in your practice?

I’ve been in private practice for the past 17 years; my focus has been creating an incredible oral surgery office to serve our community.  I am constantly evaluating and improving my skills, our office, our staff, patient experiences and outcomes.  Our practice has always been an early adopter of technology to stay on the cutting edge.  We recently became Joint Commission accredited, mirroring my inner drive to hold oneself to a higher standard.  I spend my days happily collaborating with our referring orthodontists or meeting young adults regarding wisdom teeth.  I enjoy the digital process/planning for our implant, orthognathic and joint patients, as well as staying well-rounded with facial trauma.  I have never been the primary surgeon for malignant disease of the oral cavity but work closely with my ENT colleagues.  As trite as it may sound, I try to maintain a “Full Scope” of practice in an exceptional office.

Outside of being a surgeon, I’m a connoisseur of hair care products 😉. I also enjoy being a stunt double for Scott Van Pelt on ESPN, but there’s not enough danger.  In all honesty, God, family and friends are the cornerstones of my life.  I've been married to my extremely patient and understanding wife for the past 24 years. We have two incredible daughters who keep us busy with dance classes and musical theater.  I enjoy traveling the world with my family and for mission work. I try to stay healthy and enjoy the occasional half marathon or endurance race.  To unwind and relax, I usually have a book with me, but being on an island would be even better.  My Achilles heel is food; I love sitting down and sharing a meal with friends, family and colleagues around the world, reconnecting and simply enjoying each other’s company.
